Drywall Repair and Sheetrock Patching

Hardware holes, settling cracks and water stains: three kinds of wall damage

Drywall Repair and Sheetrock Patching in West Palm Beach for holes from mounting hardware, cracks from settling, and water damage from leaks comes down to three very different problems that look alike once the wall is painted over. Each one needs its own fix.

Holes from TV mounts, shelving anchors and door handles are the easy ones, though a big anchor hole still needs a proper backing patch and not a dab of filler. Cracks are harder. Houses and condos in Palm Beach County shift slightly as the ground settles and as humid summers swell the framing, and a crack along a corner or above a door frame will open again if it's only been painted over.

Water marks tell you something else is going on. A brown ring on a ceiling may come from a roof leak in rainy season, a plumbing line, or an air-conditioning drain pan. The source should be fixed first, then the damaged board is cut out or sealed so the stain doesn't bleed back through the new paint.

Tape, float, sand, prime, then feather the edges well past the damage

A patch that lasts is built in layers. Loose or crumbling material is cut back to solid board, and the opening is bridged with a backer or new drywall. Joint tape goes over the seam so the repair can't crack along its edges, and joint compound is floated over it in thin passes instead of one thick glob.

Each coat is allowed to dry and then sanded smooth. The last passes are feathered, which means the compound is spread well beyond the damaged area and tapered so thin that your hand can't feel where it ends. That wide feathering is what keeps a light from raking across a bump later in the afternoon.

Once the surface is smooth it's primed. Bare compound drinks paint differently than the wall around it, so unprimed patches come back as dull squares, a flaw painters call flashing. Priming evens the absorbency so the finish coat looks the same over the repair as it does everywhere else. If the damage sits on a ceiling or an old textured surface, our popcorn ceiling removal page covers how those are handled.

Matching the sheen so the repair disappears under paint

The test of a good patch is that nobody can find it. Getting there takes more than smooth compound. The finish coat has to match the sheen of the wall around it, because flat, eggshell and satin paint reflect light differently, and a patch in the wrong sheen glows or goes dull when the sun moves.

In practice that often means painting the full wall, corner to corner, rather than touching in a small circle. A touched-in spot almost always shows, especially on walls that have faded after years of strong Florida light. Painting to a natural break such as a corner or a trim line hides the repair for good.

Schedule an inspection and repair estimate to review wall damage and determine the preparation needed before repainting. We'll find the cause, tell you plainly what's cosmetic and what isn't, and write the scope down for your home in West Palm Beach, Royal Palm Beach, Greenacres or anywhere nearby.
